Photo Friday: After all these years

More than twenty-eight years ago I left Harbor Beach to come to Chicagoland. A country mouse in the city. Just after the new year dawned. Before I left, I packed up my mini-van with text books from college and resource books from work.  Someone stole them while I was at midnight mass, Christmas Eve. “Whoever stole the box, will see those books are of no value to them,” I said to my friend Cindy. “I’m sure they’ll bring them back.” “Adela, think about it,” she replied. “They’re thieves.” I was so naïve. My co-workers sent me off with $100 inside a…

Gratitude Monday: The Blessings of Too Much

I’m still on a “high” for the Chicago Writes Conference this past weekend. I’m invigorated by the little things people said. Like “late bloomer” tweetthis] author Eric Charles May, who said, no one says ‘how are you going to make money gardening?’ when gardening is what you love to do. If you love to write, write. [/tweetthis] Thank you Eric Charles May. And Laurie Scheer, who said she thought she could get five queries out a day, and she found she was lucky if she got five a week out. I feel so much better.  Laurie also said, the media is hungry…

Gratitude Monday: Overflowing in Abundance

A long Road trip, a hundred new friends and support from afar fill me with gratitude. Wow, my cups is overflowing. Wow! What a week. Loved-One on one end and sister Mary on the other, I traveled between Chicago and Nashville like I had my own private security and travel arrangers. Mary kept me posted on road conditions; Loved-one made sure I got a hotel room at my home away from home, Hampton Inn, and a place to get my iPad fixed. Yes, I dropped my iPad, destroying the glass. Batteries Plus & Bulbs fixed me up in 3 hours…

Gratitude Monday #61: Happiness is the Truth

I woke up this morning and began to sing. So many things overwhelm me with gratitude: Sasha’s constant vie for attention. Warm Hugs, and Wet Kisses. Ahhh… Clap along cuz Happiness IS the Truth. What’s on your gratitude list this week?  Please join Laurel at Alphabet Salad for a gratitude…

Dawn of the Creepy Witches’ Fingers

My friend, Dawn, brought these cookies to work one year.  Some people could hardly stand to look at them.  Creepy witches’ fingers are now part of our Halloween fun.  And every year, I think of Dawn.  The recipe is super-easy to follow and only takes a few ingredients. You need: butter flour almonds vanilla almond flavoring powdered sugar baking powder salt red gel icing. The original recipe calls for blanched whole almonds.  For some reason, these are hard to find.  Slice almonds work well, they look like dirty fingernails.  Whole almonds work just as well also. This recipe really does…

NaPoWriMo Half-way Challenge: A little help from my friend.

Today’s prompt from NaPoWriMo:  “write a pantun. Not a pantoum — though they are related. The pantun is a traditional Malay form, a style of which was later adapted into French and then English as the pantoum. A pantun consists of rhymed quatrains (abab), with 8-12 syllables per line. The first two lines of each quatrain aren’t meant to have a formal, logical link to the second two lines, although the two halves of each quatrain are supposed to have an imaginative or imagistic connection.” Huh?  Here goes, with a little help from my grandson, Niall (10 years old.) Wisdom…
