Pause, Breathe, and Take Stock: 2017-26

To me, last Monday seems like a month ago.  I got a bit of “flash fiction” finished for Friday, and forgot to post it because as soon as I hit the door… well, I really don’t have any excuse except that I got busy doing something else and I forgot.   I got something done that I really wanted to do, and I knew would make me feel a lot better, but avoided because I hate cleaning. I do love clean, though, which, I suppose, seems like a paradox.  Come to think of it, who doesn’t like clean more than…

Meet Clayton Smith, Chicago Author

I met Clayton Smith at the “Chicago Writes Conference” last September.  He read from his then soon-to-be-released novel, Anomaly Flats. He hooked me with the scene where the main character, Mallory, gets introduced to the Oracle, which turns out to be the bowling alley.  I could hear, see, and smell that bowling alley.  The idea that a place has prescience stayed in my head until I could get the book.  Plus, Clayton stuck around and chatted with me for a while. Okay, maybe I hooked him into a conversation a little bit, too.  After all, I’m the woman who sat…

Tina Fey: My Dream Guide

Last night I had an interesting and vivid dream:   I went to a writers conference for women.  A veteran shepherded each new attendees.  I got Tina Fey. We walked among the new and veteran writers; all women, many of performers from Saturday Night Live. (Maybe they’re all writers; I don’t really know.  It was a dream.) “Oh my,”  I said under my breath.  “It looks like she really gained weight.” I nodded toward a comedienne who had grown in girth since the last time I saw her on SNL. “Let that be a warning to you,” said Tina.  “She…

BlogHer, a Neti Pot, and Me

A cold caught me.  It’s had me for over two weeks.  Not a down-in-bed kind of illness; just the persistent, oh-you-wanted-to-sleep-sorry-I’m-gonna-make-you-cough sort of sickness.  Three days ago I got the Netti Pot out. Now the Neti Pot is loved and recommended by many, including Mom, Number One Grandson, and Love-One.  That said, Neti Pot seems like some sort of twisted torture to me.  You want me to pour a teapot full of water up my nose?  I don’t think so.  It hardly matters that I actually feel better after my sinuses are purged with saline.  Who the heck thought this…

Photo Friday: It’s Clouds’ Illusions I Recall

I’m readying myself to follow-up on an editing contact.  I feel so vulnerable and frightened.  So instead of diving in, I ponder and procrastinate. Bows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I’ve looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way     I spotted these clouds outside my home this week. So beautiful.  So quick to change.  And gone before I tired of them.  It looks like…
